Custom Second Gen Air Intake

Custom Second Gen Air Intake

One of the many stupid things toyota did on their second gen 4runner’s with the 3.0, is their whole intake system. Many silencers and air boxes all unnessiary and decreases horse power and acceleration.

I looked up online and found many cheap intake systems on ebay with the common cone filter on the end…bassicaly all for show and noise…a bad idea when you do a lot of offroading especially if you live where it gets wet a lot. Not finding what we wanted on line we set out to build our own system that worked with the already exsisting mass air flow sensor and air filter. So we made our way down to the local home depot and bout the following

Hose Couplers with clamps

The we went to a local exhaust place and were able a steel 3″ pipe with a 40% bend a perfect fit with a few cuts.

Step One

Mock up the design with Dryer flex pipe.

Using the dryer and the hose couplers install install the pipe and make your bends carefully to get the shape and size your need.

Step Two

Use Flex Pipe to Make Cut Marks on Steel Pipe

Taking your flex pipe make your marks on your steel pipe so you can cut it accordingly.

Step Three

Cut Steel Pipe to Fit

Cutting the pipe can be difficult. The Pipe is really hard steel.

Step Four

Drill two Holes for Remaining Hoses That Need to Be Attached

In the steel pipe you need to drill two holes for the two air pipes going into the intake. See Photos.

Step Five

Make Final Clean Cuts and Clean the Hell Out of It

I wanted to make sure it was really clean so after everything fit it cut it which a metal cutter and ran a wire brush though it till there was no dirt or bers.

Step Six

Reassemble it all

After putting everything back in and your plastic fitting in the holes you drilled I added some JB weld around them to make sure no air was excaping.
